Pursuant to Section 3 of the Stop Campus Hazing Act of 2024 (Public Law No:118-173),New Mexico State University publishes and distributes this report of hazing violations and the organizations disciplined. The information below includes the name of the student organization, the dates (if known) of the hazing behavior,  the date such behavior was reported the University, the dates of investigation and when the organization was found responsible, and a description of the findings.The information also includes whether any findings of hazing involved the abuse or illegal use of alcohol or drugs and the date(s) the University provided notice to the student organization that the incident resulted in a hazing violation. Reports of Hazing that did not result in finding of responsibility are not included. The University will maintain this information and provide any updates bi-annually.

Annual statistics on hazing are available in the University's Annual Security Report. Please note that hazing statistics will be included beginning with the 2026 report (issued in 2027). Hazing statistics include incident reports that meet the federal definition of hazing in Section 485(f)(6)(A) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C 1092(f)(6)(A)). Such statistics do not reflect actual findings of hazing behavior, which are included in the Campus Hazing Transparency Report.

2024 Fall Semester

General Description of Hazing Incident: During the fraternity's retreat near Cloudcroft,NM in the fall 2024 semester, new members were required to participate in activities that included;
  • New members being bound to one another while performing tasks.
  • New members were also blindfolded and lead into the woods away and directed to find their way back to camp.
  • New members were also required to participate in a group activity where alcohol was consumed by individuals under the age of 21.
University Findings: Upon conclusion of the conduct process, Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) was found responsible for
  1. Hazing
  2. Alcohol
  3. Drugs
  4. Health and Safety Hazard
  5. Violation of NMSU Policy
University Sanctions or Court Fines:
  • Disciplinary Probation through May 15, 2026
  • Social probation per 2023 National ATO Directive
  • Comprehensive Alcohol Educations training for all members
  • comprehensive Hazing Prevention Education training for all members during Spring 2025, Fall 2025, and spring 2026 semesters
  • Monthly leadership meetings with professional staff
  • Present an educational Program to IFC chapters on Risk management and event Host responsibilities by November 1, 2025.

Fall 2022 Semester

General Description of Hazing Incident: In early January 2023, individuals affiliated with the Men's Basketball program came forward to allege that from the Fall 2022 semester up until that point that there had been several incidents of hazing within the athletic team. This case was investigated by the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) with help from the Dean of students office.
  • Members of the NMSU Men's Basketball team assaulted other members of the team and support staff
  • victims were required to strip and were subjected to their genitals being touched/grabbed.
University Findings: N/A
University Sanctions or Court Fines: The Men's basketball program was suspended for the rest of the season.

2021 Fall Semester

Date the investigation into the incident was Initiated: December 9, 2021
Date in which the investigation ended with a finding that a hazing violation occurred: January 18, 2022
Date in which the Institution provided notice to the student organization that the incident resulted in a hazing violation: January 25, 2022
General Description of Hazing Incident: During the 2021 Fall semester, new members were required to carry objects called "buddies" and if members forgot or lost their "buddy", their "buddy" increased in size. Carrying a "buddy" was part of a lesson in responsibility and brotherhood.
University Findings: Upon conclusion of the conduct process, Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) was found responsible for:
  1. Hazing
  2. Complicity
  3. Violations of NMSU Policy
University Sanctions:
  • Disciplinary Probation for the Spring 2022 semester
  • All TKE events must be approved through Crimson Connection
  • TKE must submit a new member plan in full detail to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  • TKE must have 75% of the active roster attend Novak talks presented by the Office of student Involvement and Leadership Programs.
  • TKE must have 75% of their active roster attend ForCollegeForLive event presented by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs.

Date in which the Institution provided notice to the student organization that the incident resulted in a hazing violation: December 20, 2019
General Description of Hazing Incident: During an unapproved, off-campus retreat;
  • A Kappa Sigma pledge was shot in the leg with a handgun by a Kappa Sigma member.
  • Kappa sigma pledges were also required to protect an "egg" while Kappa Sigma members would try to tackle pledges to break the egg.
University Findings: Upon conclusion of the conduct process, Kappa Sigma (KS) was found responsible for:
  1. Hazing
  2. Health and Safety Hazards
  3. Alcohol
  4. Weapons and other Explosive Materials/Devices
  5. Personal injury/Property Damage
University Sanctions or Court Fines: Kappa Sigma was dismissed as a recognized student organization at New Mexico State University through the Fall 2024 semester.
